Scouts jet off to NZ for Maori Christmas

THREE adventure-seeking Scouts from West Wickham have jetted to New Zealand for Christmas, hoping to discover the wonders of the Maori culture.

16-year-olds Jessica Shannon and Charlotte Tonelli and 19-year-old Jade Donaldson from the 8th West Wickham group have teamed up with other Scouts from the Bromley District to take part in the two-week trip to New Zealand’s North Island.

They will stay overnight with a Maori tribe, visit Hells Gate geothermal park and sail to view the Maori Rock Carvings.

The youngsters will also help out at a soup kitchen in Rotorua over the Christmas period, in a bid to give something back to the local community.

Jade Donaldson said: "I’m excited about everything that we’ll be doing as its planned to be a once in a lifetime trip, but the part I’m looking forward to the most is helping a charity, LoveSoup, at Christmas. This will be a very special experience for all of us and one we’ll never forget."

Expedition manager David Goodwin added: "They have worked very hard over the past two years to make this trip their own. They have created the itinerary and decided their main project based on what they want to get out of their Explorer Belt Expedition.

"From day one it was obvious that they were going to gel well as a team."
